How to Style Florals in the Fall

Whenever it comes to floral, I feel like spring gets all the credit. But let’s be honest, a fall floral is just as fun—and this Free People smocked top has quickly become my favorite blouse for the season. I love the details of this top like the pleated sleeves and the smocked cuffs. It feels on-trend without feeling too trendy… do you know what I mean?

For a long time, I wasn’t even sure if you could wear florals for fall. It kind of felt like one of those “no white after Labor Day” rules. But these days, there really are no rules. You can choose what you love and wear it any time of year, and let’s be honest, prints are having a moment right now.

So if you’re wondering how to wear floral in the fall, I’ve got you covered!

When I was looking for a few cute tops to add to the rotation for this fall, I knew I wanted something floral that I could wear with skirts or jeans. This blouse is playful enough that you could sport it during a happy hour or girls’ night out but classic enough that you could wear it to work. Here are a few things I kept in mind while trying to figure out how to style this look.

Choose Fall Colors

When you’re looking for a floral print to wear for fall, you should try to find colors that reflect the season like mossy green, copper, plum, etc. Because of its colors, I knew this blouse could be paired with darker skirts, boots, and sweaters that I usually wear this time of year.

Pair With Darker Hues

During springtime, there’s nothing more classic than a pair of light denim or white pants and a floral top or light, flowy floral dress. It’s all about pulling out those bright colors. But during the cooler months, you’ll want to focus on the darker colors of your floral piece. I love how the brown in this skirt pulls out the darker pops of color in this blouse.

Keep Everything Else Neutral

If you’re going to be styling floral pieces for fall, it’s a good idea to let your floral be the star of the show. Don’t pull in dramatic or trendy items that will make the look feel too busy. Instead, keep it simple with neutral pieces like a cute skirt, dark denim, and classic boots.

Bring in Layers

As it starts getting colder outside, you may need to start bringing in layers. A cute cardigan or neutral scarf pairs great with a floral top or dress and adds the perfect seasonal touch. I plan to style this top with this pair of dark wash jeans, a light sweater, and some loafers.
