5 Types of Basics You Need for the Transition to Fall

I sound like a broken record when introducing all my fall content lately (are y’all liking all the coverage?!) but basically we’re in that weird transitional time of year. It happens in-between seasons and I notice the trickiest shift between summer and fall and then winter and spring – basically when the style does a 180 but the weather isn’t caught up yet. So this is the time of year that I basically live in something I call “transitional basics”.

These are items you can wear from one season to the next and basically, they gently transition your style from say summer to fall. They aren’t pieces that scream fall (since it’s still like 90 degrees in Dallas), but they either have little hints of fall OR they can be worn now and then again once the weather changes.

This is what most of my closet is TBH and what I suggest spending the most money on when it comes to fashion. I love a trending piece or something that’s very true-to-season once the weather changes, but for the most part, I like pieces I can get wear out of in MULTIPLE seasons. So, if y’all need some basics, here are 5 types that you can wear now and once it’s truly fall (and then some in winter and spring too!). PS I’m not covering shoes in this post because honestly that needs its own post – which is coming later this week!

Jeans

Obviously! I live in jeans throughout the year and get so excited for fall because sometimes it’s too hot for jeans in the summer in Texas. For jeans that can go from season to season, I like a medium wash and a pair that is either cropped or skinny enough to fit with boots eventually. I also really like the look of straight legs or wide legs, but I’m too short for some of them. This pair is a great slim fit though if you’re looking for a pair! And one of my FAVORITE parts of fall coming is the return of black jeans – always a go-to for me from September-March. Love how this pair of black jeans has buttons that would look cute w/ cropped tops (and sucks everything because of the high waist).

Lightweight long sleeves

This is honestly my favorite type of top to wear – lightweight long sleeves. I love a good sweater but sometimes the bulk is annoying you know? These are long sleeves that you can even wear with shorts before it cools down but the textures and colors (and longer sleeves) make them feel more fall-appropriate.

Versatile dresses, skirts & jumpsuits

I actually really enjoy dresses, skirts, and jumpsuits in fall and appreciate that you can get more wear out of them! I’ll always be a sucker for a skirt and boots (Southern girl over here!) and think it’s one of the cutest ways to move into fall. I also live for lightweight sweater dresses that you can throw a denim jacket or cardigan over as I did in these pics! This is the LBD that I’m wearing and I’ve seriously worn it like a million times. If you don’t have one like this in your closet, YOU NEED. I’m also very into this olive green wrap jumpsuit (it’s only $79!)!

Light outerwear

If you live somewhere where the mornings or evenings are starting to turn colder, you definitely are grabbing a jacket already. But obviously, it’s not the time to grab your puffer or faux fur jacket yet! Something like this lightweight jacket is perfect this time of year, and so is a denim jacket, plaid blazer or a duster.

Tops that layer well

This is actually a VERY hard thing to find. Well, not to find, but it’s hard to find ones that are GOOD. Do y’all agree? So many tops simply do not layer under things well whether they bunch, are too clingy and unflattering, don’t tuck well, etc. But layering is obviously crucial for fall and September/October. Below are some t-shirts, camis and bodysuits that I swear by!
