How to Style a Slip Dress
Lately, I’ve been noticing slip dresses everywhere and have been falling more and more in love with them. So I was excited when Splendid wanted to work together for Spring and had one of them in their newest collection. My eyes went STRAIGHT to it and I instantly knew which piece I wanted to style for the collaboration.
All that to say, I’m super stoked to have this navy slip dress for spring and can’t wait to wear it all season long! No joke, I’ve already worn it 3x this week. Unlike wearing jeans or any top-and-bottom outfit, it’s SUCH an easy throw-on and simple to style different ways. With them rising in popularity and me having just added one to my wardrobe, it only seemed fitting to talk about how to style a slip dress for today’s blog post. I hope you enjoy! :)
How to style a slip dress for spring
There are 3 specific guidelines I came up with when styling a slip dress:
Decide on style
When considering how to style a slip dress, you first and foremost want to think about where you’re going (obviously) and how dressy you’ll need to be. Depending on the material, odds are you can do a lot with your dress. I’d recommend sticking to something attire-neutral (like this cotton-y material versus a super silky, sexy one) if you want it to be versatile for dressing up and down. Plus, it’s easier on things like stains and all that mess. If you’re going to a wedding or something fancier, you obviously want a more dressed-up version of the style. But I love that I can wear this blue one to church, brunch, or running around town – it’s just more my style.
Add another item or two
With your occasion in mind and how snazzy you want to be, let’s think about your “other item” – this could really be any sort of accessory or even a jacket like I’m wearing here. Other things you could style your slip dress with could be a belt, funky bag, chunky necklaces (or delicate), choker, cardigan, and I’m sure there’s more that I’m not thinking of at the moment. But I would just suggesting adding SOMETHING to your slip dress look to give it a little form, color, or dimension.
For this look, I went with a white denim jacket because I knew it would be easy to tie around my waist or wear if I got a little chilly. Plus, I just love white denim jackets and am always looking for an excuse to sport one. Oh, and I love how white and navy look together with cognac accessories!
And then I added the hat since it was extra sunny that day and I was in a super Spring-y and vibrant mood! How fun is this little boater hat?! I love it!
Be mindful of heel height
I finished up the look with matching-ish cognac-colored shoes, and ones with a little height. The thing about slip dresses – since they usually hit in a midi length like this – is that that cut tends to make me feel/look even shorter. Especially my legs. Maybe that’s why I never owned one before? But I realized that styling them with heels makes me feel great and I end up really liking the look! Taller girls can definitely get away with wearing flats, but if want to elongate the look, I’d suggest strappy sandals with a heel. I love these suede peep-toe cognac heels for multiple reasons but to name a few: I love the cute tie detail, the color, and the thickness of the heel. To me, they’re super adorable and ideal for this time of year! And the perfect match with this pretty dress, no?
I also think these shoes would look super cute with an all white look. I just got this white (longer) tunic also by Splendid and plan on wearing it with white jeans and these shoes as well. In fact, I actually have the tunic in 3 other colors – wore it on the blog WAY back in the day here! (Don’t judge bc this was AGES ago lol – my hair is even a different color!)
Outfit Details: Splendid Navy Dress (wearing size XS, I’m 5′ 4″) // White Jean Jacket (old – similar here) // Splendid Heels c/o // Sun hat (old) // Chloe Marcie Bag (smallest) // Sonix Sunglasses // Gorjana Chloe Necklace // Baublebar Vivian Tassel Drop Earrings
Found other items by Splendid that are just too cute to pass up!
