5 Ways to Style a Midi Skirt

I took a break from doing these videos during all the Nordstrom sale madness, but I’ve really missed them! Instead of doing one every single week, I’m setting a (hopefully) more attainable goal of doing 2 good ones a month. I’m excited to be back this week talking about midi skirts. It was one of my most requested styling topics!

How To Style a Midi Skirt: Your Concerns

When it comes to styling midi skirts, here are some of the main concerns I heard from y’all via DM:

  • “I feel like I’m too short to wear a midi skirt and pull it off…”
  • “I never know what to pair with my midi skirts…”
  • “What kinds of shoes are best to wear with midi skirts?”
  • “Do you have to tuck your top in to pull of a midi skirt look?”

Do any of these things resonate with you?

Shorties, You 100% Can Pull Off a Midi Skirt Outfit

I want to start with saying that I am only 5′ 3″ and think I can still pull of a midi skirt. Even if you’re shorter than that, you can make a midi skirt outfit work for you, I promise! I used to feel like I could only were a midi skirt if I paired it with heels. Nope! You can totally wear a midi skirt with sneakers or flats – I think the trick is that you want the skirt to hit you a little further up your leg! I actually had to get this one hemmed so that it would look right!

Where I Like to Shop for Midi Skirts:

  • Reformation – I think these skirts are by far the BEST quality and fit! They’re a little more pricey, but gosh I just love their midi skirts the most of all the ones I’ve tried-on or purchased over the years!
  • ASOS – they always have a great selection of midi skirts and have petite sizing which is really nice!
  • Anthropologie – sometimes I’m able to find really cute and different midi skirts at Anthropologie, but I’ve only purchased one from there over the years.
  • Nordstrom – they typically have a pretty good selection of options to choose from! I’ve gotten almost all of mine at Nordstrom (even the Reformation ones I own!).

5 Ways To Style a Black Silk Midi Skirt

Rather than show you several different midi skirt outfits, I thought it might be fun and helpful this week to show you ONE SKIRT styled 5 different ways.  Then I’ll include some other looks at the end for more inspiration.

Please feel free to comment on this post with any specific questions of styling concerns you may have – I’m happy to help!

I wanted to provide an option that would be appropriate for work (well, I’m not sure if you can wear open toe? but if not just swap for some pumps!). I love the mix of materials here and then added a printed mule for some texture.

I love pairing midi skirts with tees! I either do a front tuck or wear it tied-up like I did here! And in order for me to feel confident pulling off a midi skirt with sneakers, the skirt has to show a  signifiant amount of my angels. Otherwise, it just cuts me off weird  if you know what I mean!

I didn’t realize how much I’ve love the midi skirt with my espadrille wedges, but I think it looks AWESOME! As soon as I put the shoes on with the skirt, I knew a cropped tee would look perfect. I love cropped tees, especially when paired with high-waisted bottoms like here!

I love wearing midi skirts with tighter tanks and bodysuits! And when you’ve got something tight on up-tight, it’s easy to add on a third layer like a denim jacket or a cropped moto!

Lastly, I wanted to style a button-up top with this midi skirt to show that you don’t just have to wear tight tanks, bodysuits, tees or cropped tops. When I tried just tucking in the shirt, it was too baggy because of the fit of my particular chambray. It was too much fabric on top and bottom and my waist got lost. But I love  how it looks tied up like this! I only buttoned the top three buttons and left the majority of the shirt to use for the big knot (I knotted it twice!)

More Midi Skirt Outfit Inspiration:

I love pairing midi skirts with a belt bag! Reformation makes some my absolute favorite skirts and they fit so well! I didn’t have to get this one hemmed or anything either, which is so nice!

date night outfit with midi skirt and white top spring date night

This is another Reformation skirt (told ya I love them!) and was part of one of my weekly outfit inspo posts covering date night looks!

I had mentioned above that I love the look of a midi skirt paired with a moto jacket! This look was part of my 2019 Summer Capsule Wardrobe if you missed it! I styled this skirt multiple ways for y’all!
