10 Fall 2017 Trends I’ll Be Wearing

fall 2017 fashion trends

Oh em gee y’all! I’m feeling a RE-newed sense of excitement for fall fashion and in a whole different way than ever before! I’ve always been the BIGGEST fan of fall clothing, but this year I’m really excited to venture outside my personal comfort zone and probably YOURS too!

In regards to fashion, my mindset on my blog has always been to color inside the lines. Wear what’s easy, what people really wear. But to be honest, I like to take things up a notch when I’m being the truest and most authentic version of myself. I don’t know if that makes sense? I mean yes, sometimes I’d rather play it safe/easy, but then other times, I like to take risks and challenge myself to try new things and ways of expressing myself (with my outfits – ha!). I’ve held back from doing that as much on the blog because I was nervous or thought, “What if I can’t pull it off” or “What if people don’t like it because it’s out there or different?”. Well! Not this year, not this season.

You’ll probably still see the quintessential “fall staples” and go-to combos such as riding boots, blanket scarves, and puffer vests, but you also might see me flirting with current trends a little more than usual. Scratch that. You DEFINITELY will! And this is something I’m REALLY pumped about. I hope you’ll continue to follow along as I experiment a little 😉

The Breakdown: 10 Fall 2017 Trends I’m Excited To Wear

I wanted to dedicate a post to ALL THE AMAZE-BALL TRENDS that I’m super stoked about for the coming season! Especially with NYFW starting and designers debuting their SS18 lines, it’s the perfect time to talk about what’s hot NOW for the most immediate season (aka what was on the runways and such last February + is hitting the storefronts now!).

There are SO MANY things I’m excited about, but I’ve refined my list to my ultimate favorites! And I’m hoping to dive into a few of these on a deeper level in my “TRENDING” series that I occasionally touch on via dedicated outfit posts on the blog. And since it’s September (aka BIG fashion month!), it’s only natural that I’d have more fashion-related content this month. Right?

Let’s get started! Out of all the trends, these are the 10 that I’m most excited about.

Trend 1: Victorian Detail

We’ve seen ruffles and all sorts of frilly details all spring & summer, and you can bet your bottom dollar that you’ll continue to see these fun girly details dominating the fall scene. I’m excited to see how the trend is translated into fall and even winter ensembles. One detail I’ve already seen that I’m loving is adding the Victorian collars – or as Elle Magazine called them, the “turtleneck’s fancy older sister.” HA!

Trend 2: Sporty Chic

If you like the athleisure trend, get excited, because it’s not going anywhere! If anything, it’s gotten more fashion-forward and chic, but the comfort levels are still there. Sporty, sleek on-the-go athleisure will be your BBF, with things like quarter- and half-zip windbreakers, athletic-inspired slides, double stripe accents, upscale track suits and pants, and the return of the Nike Cortez sneaker. Basically, returning to the late 90s/early 2000s, but in an elevated manner.

Trend 3: Deconstructed Classics

The twisted shirting trend that dominated last season is still going strong for fall, with sliced-and-diced pieces ruling the runway at Public School, Monse, ADEAM, and beyond. At Milly, creative director Michelle Smith chose “Fractured” as the theme of the collection, which manifested in sequin dresses with slashed hems, oxfords pieced together this way and that, and sweaters torn practically in two. Symmetry is so overrated, anyway.

Trend 4: Blazers

One thing we’re seeing EVERYWHERE on Instagram is blazers. And I know that’s not shocking for fall, but we’ve never seen so many types. 70’s-inspired plaid and velvet with strong shoulders are two that are pretty much non-stop. With nods to menswear staples and silhouettes, designers reinvented the working woman’s wardrobe with the blazer lineup. The lineup comes with bold shoulders and plenty of attitude. I’m really like what Céline, Markus Lupfer, and Jil Sander are doing. I adore the look of a blazer dress too – so sexy yet chic and FUN.

Trend 5: Velvet

Velvet seems to come and go, but this year, it’s back in full force. From the blazers I mentioned above to velvet accessories, I love this trend! I especially think it’s cool on a pair of high booties or a purse. The colors are kinda everywhere, too – look for velvet to be deep (dark blue, forrest green), or bright (orange, pink). Basically, velvet everything right now.

Trend 6: Florals

I’m not talking about the punchy, bright florals we see in spring and summer – I’m talking about much more muted florals. Honestly, some of the prints look very grandma-ish, but totally I’m into it. I think it’s refreshing, feminine, and pretty. Also seeing a lot of 70’s-inspired florals. Think black, brown, tan, cream, mixed together with flowers.

Trend 7: Bold Red

With Fendi, Giambattista Valli, and Alberta Ferretti dictating the fashion trajectory with their emphasis on red, red, red, get ready to see a lot of the shade this fall. It was all red, all over, on the runways in February, and we’re starting to see it in stores. This isn’t a color I wear a ton of – and I know it’s a bit intimidating – but we can do it! I love a red blazer, a red bag, or even a pair of pants.

Trend 8: Metallic everything

I’m talking every type of metallic: Silver, metal, gold, etc. Just like mixed metals are popular in the home design world right now, fashion is on board as well. Designers are offering all sorts of ways to dress like the disco ball of your dreams this season, from a slouchy sequin dress worn over a camel turtleneck to a Studio 54-worthy suit covered in over one million Swarovski crystals (Brandon Maxwell, you hero, you). I think a metallic wrap dress is so chic, and even metallic mules are on my mind. Very Bianca Jagger. I just invested in these Christian Louboutin metallic sequin pumps and I am literally obsessed; I know these will be a statement piece that will last me a lifetime! I know they’re technically “on trend” this season, but sequins and metallics will always be “cool” in my book.

Trend 9: All the Utility

Military jackets are nothing new, but this year, you’ll see that trend amplified. From military and utility jackets and pants, to military boots, to straight up green and khaki everything, we’re going military this season.

Trend 10: All the fluffy things

One of the most comfortable trends of the season comes by way of feathers, fringe and fur aka things I want to wear 24/7. “Self care” may be among the most popular phrases to emerge out of the past year, and on the runway it translated into plush cocoon coats, oversized sweaters, and generous silhouettes. Comfort: one trend we can always get behind. YASSSS.

And in case you were wondering…the trends I won’t be trying slash am not looking forward to: Western trend, fishnets (and other fancy tights) under jeans, wearing a dress over pants (not tall enough to do this – lol), fun and colorful fur, Russian doll vibes, and opulent details. I just can’t.

OK YAY! This post was so much fun to write – it seriously excites me to start shopping and sporting these 10 trends.

What are you loving this fall?!
