My Everyday Glasses + My Eye Story

my everyday glasses

Since I’m wearing glasses a lot of the time these days, one of the questions I get often is which ones I wear. I’ve only got a couple pairs right now and they’ve both in the same style. I wear the Percey Medium in color Violet Magnolia with shiny gold Endcaps and absolutely LOVE them! I wanted to dedicate a blog post to them since they’ve become my go-to and so you could easily reference them in case you’re looking! They were super easy to order with my prescription and came in within a few weeks!

Real Quick: My Eye Story

I didn’t grow up wearing glasses, but a few years ago I learned that I needed them. At the time, I actually didn’t realize how bad my eyes were because I was misdiagnosed with having a lazy left eye. And at the time, I could actually see just fine because my right eye was doing most of the work. To me, most things looked just fine and I didn’t even feel like they did that much for me. So I actually just wore them at night or when my eyes were getting tired. And unfortunately for me, I never actually went to see an ophthalmologist, which is what I should have done from the very beginning! I just went to one of those places where you get your eyes checked, but never looked into it further. I’m sure I sound like an idiot, but I honestly just didn’t know?!

As my eyes continued to get worse, I started to get a little concerned. I remember being worried about walking down the aisle at my wedding (January 2020), which was startling because a year before that, I would have never had that thought – my eyes were fine. But within a matter of 18 months, I went from only needing to wear glasses sometimes to not being able to read subtitles on the TV during March of 2020. It felt pretty dramatic and quick to me, so I wanted to get my eyes checked by a specialist. I made an appointment with a doctor in Denver (where we were living at the time) once doctors started opening up again after the lockdown, and I’m so glad I did! At the end of April 2020, I learned I had a disease called Kerataconus, which explained why my eye sight was declining so rapidly. The doctor told me that if I didn’t do something soon, I might be headed towards getting a cornea transplant. A month later, I found out I was pregnant so I had to wait until I was on the other side of all things baby before I could do anything with my eyes.

So, what is Kerataconus? Basically, it’s an eye condition in which the round, dome-shaped cornea of your eye progressively thins and weakens over time (rapidly for me), causing a cone-like bulge which distorts vision. I recently got a procedure done called cross-linking, which helps stop the progression from getting worse. But unfortunately, it does not improve vision (at least not in my case) I actually don’t think there’s anything I can do to improve my vision, so I’m glad I was able to stop it from continuing to go downhill and at least preserve what I’ve got! I had to wait until I was done being pregnant and breastfeeding, so it has been a long time coming since first learning about my condition back in April of 2020.

I have an appointment soon to get fitted for a special contact for my left eye (the one that’s really bad), so fingers crossed that works out. I’ve never worn contacts, so I’m excited to see how they could help me see better! Apparently these special contacts are better than glasses for people with Kerataconus!

All this to say, get your eyes checked! I tell everyone now. I mean, I don’t think my condition is very common but I still think it’s incredibly important to stay up to date on eye health. Our vision is such an important part of life and often something we take for granted!
