BTD Weekly

New Year, New House + Recently on Instagram

The first week of 2017 has come and gone and – ready or not – week 2 is upon us! Have you had time to reflect on your 2016 and assess how things have changed and/or what you’ve accomplished slash didn’t accomplish? I’ve still got a little more reflecting to do myself, but I did jot down a few of the lessons I learned in 2016.

In addition to reflecting on the year that’s just ended, we’ve also got a brand new year to get excited about – 2017 here we come! I don’t know about you, but I’ve got BIG sights for the year ahead and there’s nothing more exciting than a fresh start – a blank slate. Speaking of, here are some (hopefully) helpful and inspiring tips on how to have your best year yet and how to set effective goals that you might have missed from last week’s blog posts.

If you follow on insta (or snapchat or read my post about my BEST purchases of 2016), then yeppp it’s official friends, I’m a homeowner! Woohoo! It felt strange before I moved in, but now that all my stuff is in this place, it feels EVEN more strange! But at the same time, I LOVE it! I just cannot wait to get all my new furniture in and get everything all decorated and organized. Right now, I”m using two 2 ft. little stools as bar stools and don’t have a mattress on my new bed – just to give you an idea of how out-of-order things currently are! I’m thinking that within the next 6 weeks we should be starting to look more like home. Stay tuned, friends!

But speaking of the new house, what kinds of posts would y’all like to see? I know you want to see the reveal, but that might take a bit of time since I’m getting a few of my staple furniture items custom made. I mentioned doing a kitchen organization post in my snapchat last night and I was surprised to see that several of y’all were actually interested in seeing that!

brighton keller new house ootd, burgundy sneakers, black leggings and grey sweater

What else would y’all like to see? Anything on buying a new house or that process? I learned so much throughout the entire process of deciding to buy and then actually buying a house including (but oh-so-not limited to) the following: borrowing money/mortgages, being a landlord (wait what?! yes, I have room mates), property taxes (omg), closing costs on a house (gahhh), saving money, and so much more throughout the process. I am by NO MEANS an expert on any of this (not even close!), but I’ve at least been through it myself now!

I will say the hardest part for me personally was figuring out “when” it made sense to invest in a house and start building equity versus continuing to rent. In other words, figuring out when I could actually afford a house and all the unexpected costs, responsibilities and potential liabilities that come with it. I feel like that’s definitely a personal decision and depends on a lot of different circumstances, but I think things like budgeting and smart ways to save are things we could all benefit from right? Either way, comment below with what you’d like to learn more about and maybe (if we have enough people interested), I can find a way to share that information on BTD in the future!

buying a washer and dryer at home depot

I posted about it last night on instagram, but YOU GUYS – I bought a washer and dryer. Maybe that’s not a big deal to you but I felt like SUCH an adult walking into Home Depot knowing I was going to get myself a big girl appliance. Like, what?! It was quite the moment for me and I’m looking forward to more to come (ha!). I’ll do my best to share them with y’all too!

NYE feels like forever ago. Or maybe that’s just me?! But this past week seemed so jam-packed that it felt sort of like 2 weeks! Anyway, this is what I wore for NYE and I (personally) absolutely LOVED this outfit – every single detail of it. The jacket is reversible and I think the floral embroidery is AMAZE (love the colors!). But the tank is maybe the BEST part and the detail that YOU can’t miss. It’s under $50 and the perfect silk tank to layer under blazers or for going out – it also comes in black.

    • YES I totally get that Amanda! And then also being able to paint walls when you want, make changes that your landlord might not want you to do etc. that’s what I’m most excited about lol!

I would LOVE to see a post on buying a house!! The whole process…Credit, loans, knowing who to talk to, and living within/below your means, and buying nice furniture, saving, debt/debt freedom, finances! Buying a house as a single woman! This would be VERY helpful! I would also love to see home management/ organizational posts, and being a landlord/roomates and yes, even purchasing appliances (real life stuff!! :D). Loving your posts lately, Brighton!! -Amber

    • yes ma’am! and UGH **eye roll** TELL ME ABOUT IT. i know. okay, I’m working on it! I just hope people continue to get engaged and still want to follow if I let the veil down a little bit :) It’s a bit scary for me for sure!

  • McKenzie

First, CONGRATULATIONS! Being a homeowner is a major accomplishment! Second, I would love to see a post about your experience with being a first time home buyer. I went through the home search in 2015, and ended up putting it on hold since I wanted to travel a bit in 2016 and 2017 (priorities!). But anything related to unexpected expenses, how to separate needs and wants, the waiting game before closing, etc. would be appreciated!

    • yes yes yes! Okay starting to work on this now – the home buying process and everything I learned! Thanks so much for commenting Mckenzie!! xoxo, B

  • Sofia Battaglia

Yes to a post about buying a house!! A lengthy post about the whole process would be great! I’m starting to edge towards the buying market, but it’s intimidating to know what’s what and there’s so much conflicting info at the moment.

  • Caitlin Ryan

Congrats on buying a home! I would love to hear your advice on saving money (both for a house and in general). Also, I’d love to hear your tips on kitchen/closet organization. I recently got a bunch of kitchen stuff for the holidays and am struggling with where it all should go!

    • Aww thanks so much, Caitlin! I’m excited and it really has been such a fun process! Okay, I’ve decided I’m going to for sure do a post on the general process because there was actually a lot I didn’t know – I felt SO CLUELESS.

and then I’d love to do more money-based topics on BTD in the future. I’m trying to slowly transition the blog into more of a lifestyle one but it’s taking some time since my current income stream is the clothes (to be completely honest with you!). But I’ll also so that I’m 170% willing to take a cut in pay in order to deliver better content because that’s ultimately what’s the MOST important to me – connecting with y’all. All that to say, THANK YOU for commenting. It means more than you know – that you took the time to say hello and “connect” with me! Thanks again, Caitlin! and I hope to hear from you again soon!

  • Huong Vo

Again, congratulations on buying your home, Brighton! I would love to hear about it ALL! My dad didn’t get a chance to teach me how to save money to buy a house because he never got a chance to own a home. I helped my mom get her home through government housing years ago so I know about that process, but do tell EVERYTHING! You can even break it into themed posts and of course, decor ideas as your stuff arrives! Looking forward to it! xo

P.S. I LOVE that mint door!

    • thank so much – I love it too! I think I might change it next year to pink to switch it up. Wouldn’t that be fun?

To be honest, my dad didn’t really teach me much either (don’t tell him I said that though). I’ve had to sort of figure it all out myself – so I feel you. I’m starting to work on this post now so let me know if you have any specific questions!

      Thanks again for commenting Huong!

      • Huong Vo

Oh, that would be SUPER fun! I’ve always wanted a house with a red door myself so changing it every once in awhile would be so fun!

Haha, I promise I won’t tell your dad. So random, but I remember when your mom launched her shoe line several years ago and seeing it in NM stores for the first time. Um, how about the process of finding a home specific to your style so you don’t have to do much, but move in? I love how your home is basically move-in ready (hellooo white, grays and marble!) and everything. I know you’re a former CPA, so any input in terms of numbers and finances on buying a first home would be GREAT!

Enjoy your beach time with your roomies! :)

  • Nicole

Congratulations on buying your new home! I would love to see a post dedicated to the home buying process/what you learned!

I’d love any feedback or specific questions to help in gathering content ideas for the blog post!

  • I’d love to see a post about all the money stuff that goes into buying a house. Like how do you figure out what your price range actually is, how much do you need for a down payment, what percentage of your income should you account for going to your mortgage or insurance, other costs not included in the sticker price, etc

    • okay for sure Hilary! Thanks for weighing in and letting me know your questions – it helps in prepping the blog post content!! I’m working on this now actually :) to post in 2 weeks!

And I’d love to see posts on the house hunting process, how you decided timing was right for you, the mortgage process and tips on saving for a down payment. And since you mentioned some custom items you’re having made, I’d also love to see a post on furniture and decor items you recommend splurging versus saving on! This is the first year I’m starting to seriously think about buying a house, and I’d love some insight into your entire process – it’d be a huge help!
