Sometimes, navy is a hard color for me. I’m usually pretty hesitant to purchase any kind of navy sweater or top (aside from summer-y ones…I’ll get to that in a minute) because I feel like I’ll be limited in what I can wear it with. In my experience, a navy top demands just the right kind of contrast when it comes to wearing it with jeans (which is basically what I live in).

Unless paired with lighter denim, a navy top will most likely blend with your jeans resulting in a totally blah and boring outfit. I think the reason why navy and dark-ish denim doesn’t work is because there’s no contrast. And although monochromatic looks can look amazing (when done right), I’m not really a fan of the navy on dark denim look. Are you? Something just seems off about it.

But it’s a good thing jeans come in a wide spectrum of washes (ha!). And so after trying this sweater on with 4 different pairs of jeans, I finally decided that I really liked it with THESE and that the reason why is that there was JUST right amount of contrast. In fact, I didn’t like it with my white jeans – something was just too matchy-matchy about it (with the blue and white stripes on the back and all). Anyway, this outfit is a great example of how to wear navy with denim in a way that doesn’t look….blah, meh, boring.

In this case, I paired my navy sweater with lighter, distressed denim for contrast and then accessorized with cognac leather bad and shoes to play up that contrast. To be honest, this would also look cute with some kind of gold necklace too!
